It sounds like you need not only a Chinese text-to-speech solution, but also need one that's compatible with an eyegaze interface for someone with ALS. Communicator 5 (made by Tobii Dynavox) has a Chinese version; you would have check to make sure it represents the specific language he speaks. I believe Grid 2 (possibly 3?) supports Mandarin but don't know much more than that. I hope you find a good solution for your patient!

Hi everyone!

Looking for suggestions.. I am working with a pALS who spends most of his day on his desktop computer. He is nonverbal, but he has been using the text-to-speech feature on Google translate to communicate. Chinese is his first language and he prefers to communicate in Chinese. At this time, he still has some function in his left hand, so he is currently using his mouse to type with the on-screen keyboard to communicate.

He is definitely moving in the direction of eye gaze.. I brought him a loaner TD I-15, but he prefers to remain on his personal computer, so he now has a loaner PC Eye Mini. My concern is that once he can no longer use his hand to type, it is going to be very laborious for him to type with his eyes using the onscreen keyboard with Google translate. I am hoping that I can find an option for him that most devices and TTS apps have for creating ‘quick phrases’ with personalized categories and phrases to make communication quicker. Does anyone know of a text-to-speech program or app (available on Windows PCs) that allows Chinese-speaking users to create personalized categories with phrases?

Thank you!

Daniele
