Subject: Co-Vid Speaks Open Source AAC App

Developers Bill Binko (the co-founder of LessonPix and ATMakers) and Brian Whitmer (the founder of CoughDrop AAC) made an open source web based AAC video chat app! You can check out the platform at https://www.covidspeak.org/

It is based on an old-school Eye Gaze Board. The communication board is placed about the outside of the screen, and the communication partner interprets what the person is saying based on where they are looking.

Screen shot of the Co-Vid Speaks App. The center of the grid features the users face via video chat. There are 8 boxes around the video. Each box contains a phrase. Phrases include: goodbye, no, I'm tired, Hi, yes, how are things?, and tell me more. There are 5 additional buttons on the left hand side of the screen for "Quick", "load", "customize", "react", and "more"

The person that can’t speak can also click on the icons if they have that ability. The app was developed to meet the needs of patients who are intubated and restricted from visits from family members because of COVID-19, but there are wonderful applications for many individuals who need permanent or temporary access to AAC.

I thought this might be on interest. Enjoy! And stay safe.
