Hi Amy,

In TouchChat, you can use the Play Library Audio action to link a button to any audio file in the music library on the device.  I haven’t actually tried it out for voice banked files, however.

I asked the Model Talker folks a while back (maybe a year ago?) if they were planning to come out with anything for the iDevices, and they said they didn’t have anything in the works at that point.  It might be worth checking in with them to see if anything has changed.

I have may have missed this answer in the e-mail string...

Amy--- can you record the .wav file in  My Talk Tools and transfer the .wav file to a SGD if needed?

Thanks,

hi Amy,

You can do this with MyTalk Tools.  It allows you to add any sound file, including .wav files, to cells.  The challenge w/MyTalk Tools for someone with ALS is that there is no keyboard for spelling novel messages, so they would have to use a different app for that.  I believe John Costello has been doing some work with this as well.

Hey Ed,

Thanks for your response.  I was wondering more specifically if any of the communication apps like SpeakIt, TouchChat, PLQ2G, etc, etc. etc.. can play sound files without leaving the communication app.   I would like a solution that allows a person to go back and forth from synthesized to digital speech easily like is possible on most SGDs.

SpeakIt allows you to create an audio file but only seems to record it's own synthesized speech.  This is great for messages you don't want to appear in the message window like "one moment please, I am typing a message for you" but not what I am looking for right now.

Banked phrases, as long as they are MP3, wav, or some other format that is played like an audio file, should be usable on an iPad or anything that plays music files; through iTunes or music player.  Modeltalker (meaning a synthesized voice right?) may be a whole different story but I really cannot speak to that.  I think someone was going to approach assistiveware about using different voice models in proloquo a while back but I never heard/do not remember the resolution on that.

As an aside, I just played around a little on my android phone to see if I could play a solitary sound file direct from the home screen.  This would allow it to function more like a comm device where you push a button to play the banked message.  I think it is possible but ran out of time figuring it out.  On an IOS device, I think you would have to navigate iTunes to do it.

Hi everyone,
Is anyone using banked voice messages or ModelTalker files on a mobile device?  Many of my patients are voice or message banking and I am afraid if they we decide an iPAD is their best solution in the future we won't be able to use their banked voice. I hope there is a way.
Amy Roman,
