How familiar are you with the PCEye Go used with a tablet?  I would like to get some user feedback.   I don’t want Jim to be cut off with a locked device and the PCEye Go seems like an option that we could purchase without insurance.  The Tobii sales rep would not demo it for us which makes me think there are limitations.   (I do know that battery life is a drawback).  Do you have resources that could give us some unbiased user information?

Yes, indeed there is an effort in Washington DC to change the current Medicare rules about Speech Generating Devices.  I would advise you to contact Pat Wildman from our Public Policy Department (I have cc’d him on this email) regarding the legislative efforts underway.

My husband, who has ALS, is in the process of obtaining a new eyegaze device.  His Tobii C-10 is not working and we are in the process of evaluating options. 

 

I just became aware that this spring Medicare regulations changed and Medicare will only lease locked devices (no internet access).  For someone who is completely paralyzed, whose only means of communication is his eyes, prohibiting access to the internet is an abomination.  We are trying to work around this (his secondary insurance may pay for an unlocked version or we will pay for it ourselves).   Fortunately we do have the means to work around this, if need be.  However, I was wondering if there are any efforts by ALSA or other groups to get public awareness of this problem.    For those who do not have the means, who must communicate with their eyes, this law makes their world a much smaller place.    

 

I would appreciate any insight you have into this issue.
