Hi,
We like the DIME tech amps and have a few in our Lending Library.  Very good sound and inexpensive. Biggest problem with the DIME amp is that the mic that comes with it almost always breaks. We had to go to Luminaud and buy replacement 3 Way High Gain Mics for all our DIME amplifiers about a year after we bought them.  They are also a bit bigger than the Spokeman so our clients, after listening to both, usually choose the smaller Spokeman.

DIME 4.13in x 3.31in x 1.38in

Spokeman 3X3X1.5

A money saving options would be to get the DIME amp and the 3 Way High Gain Mic (use the included DIME mic in as a backup mic).  You probably won't need a back up though because I have never had a problem with a 3 Way High Gain Luminaud mic.  We have some that are about 15 years old and still work fine.

If she is a Kaiser patient, you might be able to get her one covered by Kaiser insurance. Insurance coverage for DME may vary in percentage, but so far, I've successfully gotten voice amplifiers for my voice and ALS patients. Kaiser goes thru Apria to procure the amplifiers. Unfortunately, you can't choose. They only offer spokesman with a high-gain mic.

Hi Deborah,
I use Luminaud.com for amplifiers.  The have very good quality products.  At our ALSA Lending Library we have have had good luck with the Spokeman (small) or Chattervox (for larger groups) with the 3 way high gain mic.  All of these are available at Luminaud.com

BTW- You could borrow one from our library if we have one in stock. Contact me if you want me to check. Also the Spokeman and 3 Way High Gain Mic will be in the ALSA Golden West AAC Assessment Tool Kit I will be giving to you next week.

She is nonambulatory, mildly dysarthric and looking for a amplifier that might get paid for by her University (she teaches a lab in molecular biology; her classroom is mic'ed). I looked at Helen Patterson's recommendation of the Monocor system but it seems available international Amazon, not here in the states. Is there any reason not to purchase something like that since everything comes from overseas anyway?
