I have a buddy here in Tucson that rents out his beach wheelchair from Tucson.  He might have some ideas.  Have the family email him at xxxxxx@msn.com.  He has experience working with ALS patients as well since his primary business is the high end ceiling lift systems.  Probably an extreme burden to get it shipped out the patient though and it is designed for a Para.   OMBAC out of San Diego makes beach wheelchairs out of PVC material and rents them for free out of mission bay.  Perhaps they could hook them up with a chair.  We also have a guy here in Phoenix that is trying to get anybody who travels to report on accessibility issues at hotels and restaurants/resorts so the disabled community can share their personal experiences.  He might know something.  His site just got started but it is at brettapproved.com.  Hope this helps.
