Job Description

 

Job Description:     Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC)Director

                                   

Reports to:               Director of Patient Services

 

Job Summary:        The AAC Director assists Persons with ALS (PALS) in obtaining appropriate speech-assisted devices from the Chapter loan pool as well as from other sources.  The AAC Director is responsible to evaluate each client’s needs by telephone; assist in arranging Speech Therapy evaluations when needed; review results of speech evaluation; coordinate the delivery, training and retrieval of Chapter loan equipment; and monitor the on-going communication needs of each client as needed.  Work is conducted primarily by telephone and/or email, as well as in PALS homes or other community locations. 

 

Responsibilities:

 

lUpon referral from Chapter staff or other source, initiate contact with client within one working day of referral to conduct review of ALS patient’s speech and communication needs. 

lAssist as needed in referring/arranging for Speech Therapy evaluation for each client.

lWhen PALS is in need of equipment that is not otherwise available, provide equipment from AAC loan pool.  This includes transporting equipment and arranging for or providing needed training in equipment use.

lProvide in-home consultation to PALS and caregivers/families as needed.

lObtain signed loan agreements from PALS.

lEnter record of all patient and collateral contacts into Chapter database in timely manner.

lMaintain accurate inventory of all AAC devices, ensure all is maintained in safe working order, and arrange for repairs as needed.

lTrack data on equipment loans, PALS referrals, client and professional contacts, and all other activities; submit statistics monthly to Director of Patient Services.

lDevelop and maintain a referral network with augmentative communication manufacturers, vendors, and licensed speech therapists who perform evaluations for persons with ALS.

lProcess donations of usable equipment from PALS and families; arrange for transportation of items as needed.

lIdentify on-going equipment needs and submit purchase recommendations to Patient Services Director for review and referral to Executive Director.

lPresent information on aspects of ALS and AAC equipment within the Chapter and to other groups as requested.

lAttend staff meetings as scheduled (bimonthly or quarterly).

lContribute newsletter articles to Chapter as requested.

lParticipate in Chapter activities as requested.

lSubmit billing invoice to Director of Patient Services on monthly basis

 

Status/Hours:         

This is a contract position, requiring approx. _20__ hours per week. 

 

 

 

Qualifications/Requirements:

·         Certified Speech and Language Pathologist

l  Previous training/skills may be substituted for Master’s degree

·         Excellent written and verbal communication skills

·         Good interpersonal skills

·         Good working knowledge of augmentative communication devices

·         Well organized, self starter

·         Excellent follow up skills

·         Must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively

§  Ability to prioritize tasks effectively

lValid California drivers’ license and reliable transportation.

lBilingual skills desirable.

lOwns computer with internet connection and anti-virus software, evidences computer literacy in MSWord and Excel, and ability to learn Chapter database program.

lCan provide dedicated telephone voice mail system to provide confidentiality for PALS to leave messages (not to be combined with other home messages).
