You are invited to participate in a research project
involving approximately 200 volunteers. The purpose of the research is to
evaluate how power wheelchair
users’ desired future utility (i.e. ideal amount of outdoor
and indoor accessibility, degree of maneuverability, desired wheelchair
style, and future concern with wheelchair stability) may be evaluated by
virtue of the users’ attributes associated with their current
wheelchair utility, lifestyle considerations, and demographics. The
information we learn from this research may help in the design of future
power wheelchairs.
You are eligible to participate in this research if you are currently a user of a power wheelchair and are at least 18 years old. If you agree to participate, we will answer any questions you may have about the research, and then you will be asked to answer all of the questions on the questionnaire (total of 28 questions). We know of no risks to you if you participate in the research, but if you feel uncomfortable with providing an answer to any question, please just skip that question. You will not receive any direct benefit from participating in this research, but society in general may benefit if we learn how to better design wheelchairs for the desired utility of its users.
Your answers will be discussed only after they are pooled with all other responses. We may publically discuss the results of our research, and may publish the results in a scientific journal. To preserve you anonymity, please do not write your name anywhere on the questionnaire. The principal investigator on this study is Dr. John K. Layer, Director of Mechanical Engineering, University of Evansville, who may be contacted at his office phone, 812-488-2195
If you have any questions about the scientific questions regarding this study. If you have any questions about the ethical, legal, or social aspects; the review of this study by the University of Evansville’s Institutional Review Board; or other questions you would like to discuss, you may contact the chair of this board, Dr. Kyle Kiesel, Associate Professor of Physical Therapy at his office phone, 812-488-2646, who will answer your questions or refer you to an appropriate person.
