Hi Joy-

RE: the phones- Almost everything requires pressing a button to activate a call. However, there are products which are switch adapted, so you could you any kind of switch to activate the call.

1.       LANDLINE- http://www.saje-tech.com/telephoneproducts.html
There are the Saje-Tech Communicator series….  (you would press a button, but it could be switch adapted, so it could use any kind of switch.)
If you already have a computer, you could purchase the Communicator basic.

2.       Computer Based-
A person could use something like Skype (VoIP) in order to make phone calls (in conjunction with whatever computer access system they are using.)

3.       CELL PHONES
ETO Engineering makes a couple of accessible cell phones http://www.etoengineering.com/quadriplegic.htm

They do have one system which is totally “voice only” VoiceOnly ™  but it needs a power source.   It seems like most people would be better off with the switch adapted phones.

I’ll write a separate email re: the device.

Subject: [Assistive Technology] Simple AAC and voice dialers

Hi everyone,

I have two questions for the group:

1) We are looking for a simple AAC device to purchase with some grant money we received. I'm thinking something similar to the Lightwriter, but considerably less expensive. It needs to have scanning access, word prediction, be portable (A/C connection only for charging), preferably lightweight, not picture-based. What suggestions do you have?

2) Does anyone know of a truly hands-free voice activated phone dialer? The vocally phone dialer requires the user to "pick up" a handset or press the talk button on a cordless phone. Same thing with a bluetooth handset/voice dialing for cell phones - anything truly hands-free that does not require the press of a button to activate it?

Thanks for any suggestions!
