Most of our patients like the idea of
having access to messages spoken in their own voice but for various
reasons, some
aren’t interested or don’t want to be bothered. Could be
that
hearing their voice once they’ve lost the ability to speak
intelligibly only
reminds them of what they have lost. Could be that the new
synthesized
voices are so good that voice banking seems unnecessary. They may not
have any particular attachment to the sound of their own voice. I
think
caregivers and families are the ones who really miss hearing their loved
one’s
voice. I know that Eye Response has built
voice-banking into the latest version of Lifemate. You can email them
and
receive a free microphone along with a demo copy of the software (click on
link
and scroll down to voice banking http://www.eyeresponse.com/LifeMate/tabid/60/Default.aspx).
If more AAC/AT professionals and companies promote it, maybe more
patients will use it! I have handed out inexpensive
microphones
and voice banking instructions at our ALS clinics. Will have to wait
and
see if patients follow through. That is sometimes the issue –
actually
making/taking the time to do it. Not sure what folks at other
centers/facilities are doing. Would also be interested in hearing
what
others think… Amy Speech-Language
