Kevin,
I am forwarding your note onto the ALS Assistive Technology List-serv group and to Dr. Therese Willkomm at UNH.
The group, Terri and I know of devices and apps for iPads, but I just do not know about iPhones.
BTW, if Apple indeed comes out with their new iPad as rumored in Jan with a very high resolution camera, maybe it's time to consider eye-tracking as an iPad app (or maybe one exists now).

I will be in Burlington on Monday if you want to meet in person.

THanks,

-Charlie R.

Charlie –

I received your contact information from my brother, Gary, who is med director at the VA in Canandaigua.  My wife’s cousin has ALS, and he has asked about assistive technologies to better project the voice from his iPhone for comms.

I suppose he might be looking at eye tracking devices soon.  My lab is quite capable at building electronic hardware and writing code, but I wondered if you had any suggestions on compact amplification systems that can backpack onto an iPhone?  I am envisioning a device about the same size as the iPhone that consists of a battery and directional speakers to project the sound further than the standard iPhone speaker.

Also, I see that there are eye trackers working in conjunction with the iPhone, but I don’t think anyone is using the iPhone camera for eye tracking…maybe I’m wrong, but do you have any insight into this?

Thanks for your help.  BTW, I was at RIT for 12 years and miss NY – I’m one of the strange ones!

Best,
