On the note of texting from a computer…  Yahoo mail allows you to do it direct to phone numbers and comm.. partner can reply to same…  So if you want to do it that way

OK, I may be taking you off track here, but hear me out.

Verizon offers netbooks with broadband access.  This might be a better way to go.  http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/netbook/index.jsp

With a netbook you will have all of the access options similar to a computer.  To send a text message, he could send it via email – here is a listing that I found (it is dated, but I think this info is still valid…

To send a text via email, use the following format for the receiver’s cell phone carrier…

T-Mobile: phonenumber@tmomail.net
Virgin Mobile: phonenumber@vmobl.com
Cingular: phonenumber@cingularme.com
Sprint: phonenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com
Verizon: phonenumber@vtext.com
Nextel: phonenumber@messaging.nextel.com

AT&T: phonenumber@txt.att.net

Alltel: phonenumber@message.alltel.com

Metro PCS: phonenumber@MyMetroPcs.com

Where phonenumber = the receiver’s 10 digit phone number

There is an issue with getting SMS back TO the netbook.  I found an article that talks about using Google Voice to do this - http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/new_in_google_voice_receive_and_reply_to_sms_by_email.php

Alternatively, if his relatives had email on their phones, then they could just go back and forth with emails.

Probably not what you were looking for, but that’s my 2 cents.

Sorry,

The patient’s speech is not intelligible on the telephone any longer.

His partner and family want him to start using texting.  They are up for a new phone and I was hoping to point them toward a few models that have a good (i.e., larger)  keyboard or those that have been successfully used with other pALS.

Thanks for asking for the clarification.

Lisa,

I am not 100% clear what you are asking for?

Can the patient speak?  Why does he want to do text?

Hi!

Any suggestions on a verizon phone for a pALS with poor speech to upgrade to a texting phone?  He has “ok” hand use right now, but it is beginning to be impacted.

This will be a TOTAL change for the pALS as he has never texted or used technology (computers included).

Thanks!
