Margaret, I actually don’t know his physical abilities- I have
yet to work with him but wanted to give his SLP some feedback. I will ask
her! Thanks Erin From:

On Behalf Of Margaret Cotts Hi Erin- I’m not familiar with a speech generating device
called a SideKick, but there is a telephone with a QWERTY keyboard
called a SideKick… Is it possible that
that is what he is using? If he’s using the Sidekick (phone), it’s
possible he’s memorized where the keys are/ Do you know what his physical abilities are? Is it
possible for him to use a standard keyboard (albeit possibly with a little
tactile feedback?) Margaret Cotts From:

On Behalf Of Erin Singleton Hello
all, A
fellow speech therapist called me this morning to inquire about the most
appropriate AAC device for one of her patients. The patient is a 43-year
old male with profound
sensorineural hearing loss, speech impairment, and is legally blind. She
explained that he has been using a device called a “SideKick”.
I am not familiar with this device but after doing a little search it
sounds like it might be a PRC device but I don’t see
any literature on it on their website. Apparently
the device is constantly malfunctioning and has had to be sent it for
repair many times. They would like to explore a more suitable device. I
have worked with
Auditory scanning for patients with visual impairment but never someone
who also has such a profound hearing loss.
Any
suggestions are welcome! Thanks.
Erin
