Coming from the SCI world prior to working with the ALS population I am a huge fan on Supracor.  You can wash them in the shower or in a machine, and heat and moisture stays away from your skin as moisture is absorbed into the cushion.  They never pop or tear and are easy for self-transfers.  However without being able to do pressure releases or self-transfers I have always thought constant pressure relief was more of a priority to heat/moisture for our ALS population.  For that reason, I’ve always thought the Roho was best and safest for our ALS population.  That being said and knowing the CEO of Supracor I can almost guarantee all of you that if you wanted a free demo cushion they would provide one to each of you if you request it.  They also make a really cool portable/washable wound mattress. Nothing is cheap of course and vendors do not recommend them because the re-imbursement is not good since the cushion insurance codes are designed for Air cushions or Gel Cushions.

Supracor Cushions are often referred to as Stimulite cushions or honeycomb cushions.  If requesting a demo. I would request a (Contour XS) for power chair users.

Full disclosure!  I was their Sales rep for years and one of their sponsored wheelchair athletes so I am for sure a bit biased.  Their mattress came out just as I was leaving them but I have often thought that it would be perfect for those of our people who travel the world and are concerned about hotel beds being too firm.  I doubt they will offer demos of the mattress though as those are serious money…never know though.

Hello,

Asking for one of our wheelchair vendors...

Which power wheelchair cushion(s) is/are most frequently recommended for persons with ALS?

One of our vendors has been using the Jay Union cushion which has not been well tolerated and has been receiving many complaints.

The vendor asked me to survey the other Chapters and AT specialists on this list to see if there is any consensus of other options.

Thanks in advance.

Lisa
