The PALS I work with use 20 X 16”. I have used ones that are half the size but didn’t find that it was appealing to consumers of course it could have been the test group. I have made letter size using old overhead…
can’t say that many prefer them. I have received more positive feedback using ETRANs with color Alpha Encoding (similar to MegaBee) and picture based options. I really think size is dependent on the users ability—vision, eye movement, spelling, and cognition.
Hope it helps!

I recommend semi regularly, and we seem to do OK with 8 1/2 x 11. Not sure that a larger would be more adopted but cannot say I have really considered it.
On a side note (not an ALS client) I actually just started using it with someone who is using a red light, worked a lot better than her eyes...

Subject: ETRAN size
I was wondering if anyone on the list was using ETRAN boards with their clients. If so, were there any preferences about the size of the board?
I made mine 20 inches x 16 inches. I saw one today that was probably half that size, and it made me re-think the size of the board.
Any feedback appreciated!

P.S. I recently met with someone who has been doing partner assisted scanning for a while. I lent her an ETRAN board and she really liked it. She thought it was a lot faster then scanning.
To be honest, she was the first person who I’ve ever worked with who ended up using an ETRAN. I think part of the issue is that I used to have one of those “old skool” ETRAN boards. I think the layout was so
strange that it scared people.
I’ve been using a much more intuitive ETRAN layout, designed by Amy Roman (it’s in alphabetical order, but takes advantage of frequency of use.)
But I’m thinking that I made it too big.
