Subject: RE: smart nav

We have issued SmartNAV 3 AT and SmartNAV 4 AT  for many years to our PALS and families in our chapter area for Windows computers.   Overall, individuals have been pleased with the hardware and software functionality.    The SmartNAV software allows for changes in speed along vertical and horizontal axes, light filtering, and other options that aren’t necessarily available with plug-in play tracking systems like Madentec Pro or the Headmouse Extreme.    On occasion, we will also acquire the license to enable SmartNav for Apple computers.

I will say that I am not a fan of their mount system for the camera to attach to monitors.  They lack in durability and generally need to be replaced with something else.   For laptops, I frequently will place camera on the keyboard instead of placing on top of the monitor.

Thanks!

Hi Everyone,

In an ongoing effort to make the Chapter resources go further, I am asking about people’s experience and opinions using NaturalPoint SmartNav hands-free mouse alternative: http://www.naturalpoint.com/smartnav/products/compare.html

The “new” version(4)  is for sale at $499

I will admit that I was not “wowed” by its functionality when I tried the device several years ago. It was overly affected by ambient light, jewelry, reflection from glasses, etc.

I have heard recent improvements of the device have made it competitive with the Madentec Tracker Pro (the best, IMHO) and the Origin Headmouse Extreme (not my favorite, IMHO).  TrackerPro retails at $995 plus required software for mouse clicks ($199, again the gold standard IMHO) and the Origin Model at (again $995).

Any thoughts out there?
