Medicare will be requiring G-codes and severity level modifiers in July in order to fund SLP services. I have taken workshops on this and looked over all the ASHA material. ASHA does provide functional communication measures (7 point
scales) for 8 of the 15 domains for which SLPs bill (motor speech, swallowing, spoken expressive, etc).
ASHA did not submit NOMs for AAC but I would like to connect with anyone working on them. I am developing a severity measure tool for communication with patients with ALS. The tool needs to be appropriate for people throughout all the
stages of ALS and must be effective in showing improvement resulting from SLP services despite the degenerative nature of the disease. In other words, it must be built on a compensation not rehabilitation model. I am happy to share and discus the tool I
am developing with anyone who is working on this and perhaps collaborate. I wonder how different a tool for people with ALS would be from a measure of functional communication for an adult with aphasia or a person with autism. This discussion must be happening
somewhere. I'd like to find it. Please let me know or lets get it started.
Sincerely,

In addition - we need to have as many "AAC people"
participating in ASHA's NOMS efforts - another potential
source of "evidence".
From www.asha.org:
How to Become Involved in NOMS Data Collection for Health
Care
In order to participate in NOMS data collection, you must
first gain the support of your staff and administration.
Organizations may choose to participate in the Pre-
Kindergarten and/or the Adult Health Care Component(s) in
one of two ways:
1. As an individual facility
Eligibility criterion: ALL speech-language pathologists must
be members of ASHA
2. As part of a large health care system
Eligibility criterion: At least 75% of staff must be members
of ASHA
All speech-language pathologists who will be collecting NOMS
data for a facility or organization must become Registered
NOMS users by completing a self-study training program and
individually taking the User Registration Test. Once you are
ready to participate, you must:
Identify a "subscriber" for your program. The subscriber is
typically a program director or manager who agrees to serve
as a liaison between your organization and ASHA. The
subscriber must be a member of ASHA.
Complete a Subscriber Registration Form and two Letters of
Agreement.
Receive the training materials and become Registered NOMS
Users. Clinicians may earn 0.2 ASHA continuing education
units (CEUs) for successful completion of the training to
become a Registered NOMS User.
To become involved in this important effort, complete the
registration forms and submit them to ASHA or contact us for
more information at 301-296-8736 or by email at
xxxxxx@asha.org.
Thanks!
Amy
