and Alternative Communication for Infants and Toddlers

Course Format: Online Graduate Course
Course Description:
This online course is designed for therapists, educators and service coordinators involved in the assessment and training of augmentative communication (AAC) systems for children birth to 3
years. This course will cover topics related to assessment and intervention. Assessment topics will include: early intervention policies and procedures; developmental skills related to AAC use; overview
of electronic and non-electronic communication systems; and assessment tools and strategies. Intervention topics will include: strategies for building vocabulary and communication skills, teaching alternate access methods, and promoting use of communication
aids for a range of communicative functions. This course if open to graduate students, students in the UIC Assistive Technology Certificate Program and non-degree seeking individuals with undergraduate degrees in a related field. Non-degree seeking individuals
can register through UIC Office of Continuing Education

Course Description: This online course addresses how augmentative and alternative communication can meet
the unique communication needs of individuals with autism spectrum disorders. Content emphasizes evidence-based modalities and intervention strategies for individuals on the spectrum, including pre-symbolic communicators as well as individuals who benefit
from communication aids. Topics include supports for social interaction and participation, assessment, and a range of intervention approaches including SCERTS, PECS, visual supports, aided language stimulation, and LAMP. This
course if open to graduate students, students in the UIC Assistive Technology Certificate Program and non-degree seeking individuals with undergraduate degrees in a related field. Non-degree seeking individuals can register through UIC
