She does not show much ability to lift off with control. Once her arm is placed on top of the standard mouse, she can more or less slide her whole arm and hand around to move the mouse, but this is very slowed.
Some form of mini joystick is on the agenda for trial, but I know they would prefer to avoid spending money on it. It may ultimately make the most sense to just wait for the eyegaze which is hopefully coming very soon.

What about using a touchpad? Not exactly what you are looking for, but would allow small movements to be used to negotiate the screen.
Also, a mini trackball or even a touchpoint mouse - http://www.interlinkelectronics.com/MicroModule.php - might work?

I am looking for software as a short term option for a client with ALS. She is awaiting funding for an eyegaze system.
She can use a mouse but extremely limited for range and speed. So I would like the following which used to be sold as part of the infogrip pointsmart software. I believe this is no longer available. Anyone know of anything similar? Low budget would be good.
“PointSmart also includes Automatic Direction Control. This feature allows the user to touch or bump their pointing device in the direction they wish the cursor to move and PointSmart does the rest. The cursor will continue to move until the mouse is touched again and then it will stop. This feature is excellent for users that have very limited movement.”
