This has clinical implications based on the Ball, Willis, Beukelman, and Yorkston research as you know. I don't like using speech NOMs because they don't show all the benefits from our interventions (they measure "speech" which is declining but not functional communication which we can improve). As you know, I use the ALS Functional Communication Scale to develop my severity measures for G-coding. I just made a Communication Checklist for patients so they can jot down their challenges in the 7 functional communication areas. Here is the patient friendly checklist http://amyandpals.com/pdf-test/. and the AFC Scale for professionals is at http://amyandpals.com/als-communication-scale/ Here is a review article that talks about the speech rate. http://www.asha.org/Publications/leader/2004/041214/f041214a1.htm Sincerely, Amy Roman, MS, CCC-SLP Augmentative Communication Specialist AmyandpALS.Com Pinterest.com/AmyandPALS Forbes Norris ALS Research and Treatment Center 2324 Sacramento Street San Francisco, CA 94115 Cell (415)518-0592 Fax (415)600-3778 -------------------------------------------- On Wed, 3/25/15, Gizzi, Nancy <xxxxxx@leememorial.org> wrote: Subject: RE: Measurement tools / ALS clinic To: "xxxxxx@alsa.simplelists.com" <xxxxxx@alsa.simplelists.com> Date: Wednesday, March 25, 2015, 2:13 PM #yiv3368793637 #yiv3368793637 -- _filtered #yiv3368793637 {font-family:Calibri;panose-1:2 15 5 2 2 2 4 3 2 4;} _filtered #yiv3368793637 {font-family:Tahoma;panose-1:2 11 6 4 3 5 4 4 2 4;} _filtered #yiv3368793637 {panose-1:3 4 6 2 4 6 7 8 9 4;} #yiv3368793637 #yiv3368793637 p.yiv3368793637MsoNormal, #yiv3368793637 li.yiv3368793637MsoNormal, #yiv3368793637 div.yiv3368793637MsoNormal {margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;font-size:11.0pt;} #yiv3368793637 a:link, #yiv3368793637 span.yiv3368793637MsoHyperlink {color:blue;text-decoration:underline;} #yiv3368793637 a:visited, #yiv3368793637 span.yiv3368793637MsoHyperlinkFollowed {color:purple;text-decoration:underline;} #yiv3368793637 span.yiv3368793637EmailStyle17 {color:windowtext;} #yiv3368793637 span.yiv3368793637EmailStyle18 {color:#1F497D;} #yiv3368793637 .yiv3368793637MsoChpDefault {font-size:10.0pt;} _filtered #yiv3368793637 {margin:1.0in 1.0in 1.0in 1.0in;} #yiv3368793637 div.yiv3368793637WordSection1 {} #yiv3368793637 We rate the patients according to the NOMS, generally speech, voice, and swallowing – at times – AAC - after we do our assessment. Any scales or patient/caregiver self-evaluation tools would work as well. Anything pertaining to speech, swallowing or cognition targeted towards our neuromuscular population. I am working on a PI project with our clinic and would love input from others! Thanks in advance.
